Frank DiMatteo. If you haven’t heard of him, you need to keep reading because he is quite an interesting character with quite an interesting story. Which he shares in his latest book, LORD HIGH EXECUTIONER, an autobiographical memoir that focuses on none other than Albert “The Mad Hatter” Anastasia. DiMatteo began his criminal career young and became partners with porn kingpin Al Goldstein. Particularly as the distribution engine of “Screw” magazine. As a young adult, he ran a distribution company and other illicit rackets on the streets of Brooklyn. Eventually, he started to get noticed by neighborhood wiseguys who saw he was a hustler, an up and come, an earner. A mover and standup guy. This is how he became associated with the Gallo Crew in South Brooklyn. Being the son of hired hitman Ricky “Silver Fox” DiMatteo, Larry Gallo’s personal bodyguard, only helped bolster his standing in the crew. In time, Frank would work his way into the inner circles of some of the history’s most infamous New York Mafiosi. And he has waited all these years to tell this part his story. Why did he wait? Respect. It was a respect thing. An honor thing.
LORD HIGH EXECUTIONER
The Legendary Mafia Boss Albert Anastasia
Frank is one of the few wiseguys who “got out” of the life without being killed, imprisoned, or cooperating with law enforcement. Which is one of the things that make his story so unique. He was no rat. He was on the front lines. He did the dirt. Saw the bodies drop. Was in the social clubs. Spend countless hours with the bosses. And lived to talk about it.
One of the interesting things about Frank is that he was the founder and CEO of Mob Candy Magazine, which while in print flew off the shelves across the country. Television and movie stars like Frank Vincent, Armand Assante, Vinny Pastore, and many more graced the covers, as well as a few real wiseguys like Fratto and Tony Nap. Mob Candy was featured on 3 episodes of the TV show Mob Wives, at red carpet events, and in over a 100 interviews for newspapers, blogs, websites, and YouTube. But, eventually print magazines became obsolete so Frank decided to tell his story via books.
If you don’t know who Frank DiMatteo was, you need to know his full backstory. Lucky for you, its condensed into in his last two books. The first, President Street Boys: Growing up Mafia, is about him and the Gallo crew growing up as kids, and how together they eventually formed the Gallo crime family. Part 2, Were We Really Cowboys, newly released, takes place during the Profaci war that disbanded the Gallo crew and allowed him the opening to get out. Now, in his latest book, Lord High Executioner, he chronicles Albert “The Mad Hatter” Anastasia’s bloody rise from fresh-off-the-boat immigrant to founder of one of the New York’s most notorious killer clubs, Murder, Inc.
There is so much more to Lord High Executioner, the intimate conversations with mobsters we all read about but never really knew, the crazy stories and behind the scenes events that few people have ever heard. The personal relationships he forged with mob legends. They were his brothers. They were his family. And somehow he lived through one of the bloodiest Mafia wars in history. Frank knew them all. He quotes words straight from their mouth, like when he overheard Joe Gallo himself say Albert Anastasia admit he killed his own boss, Vincent Mangano. It’s also interesting to note that nobody has come along and try to discredit Frank. My guess is that there’s nothing to discredit. I also think there is a modicum of fear. After all, Frank is a man who spent his life around killers and criminals, and somehow lived to tell us about it. That in itself commands the highest level of respect.
Stay tuned. Frank has such an interesting story that we decided to a series on him and his book. I will be interviewing him personally, and asking him to recount a few of his most memorable experienced from his life in the mob. You will be able to catch the interview here, our YouTube, or my personal YouTube, Gunner Detroit.
