On This Day in 1892 Compensation is Paid to Victims of The Lynchings

On this day in 1892, U.S. President Benjamin Harrison orders a payment of $25,000.00 to be made to the families of eleven Italians who were lynched at the Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans on March 14 1891 after a Not Guilty verdict in the murder trial of David Hennessey. The lynched men were thought to be members of the Mafia.
