John Gotti would rise through the ranks of the Gambino Crime Family in spectacular fashion, facing several run-ins with the law and avoiding multiple death sentences from his own family and others. In 1986 he became head of the Gambino crime family, and was acquitted of many indictments before finally being put behind bars for life thanks to his underboss Sammy Gravano.
